Leads and clients are different records

What each holds, why they are separate, and what happens when a lead becomes a client.

A lead is someone who has not paid you yet. A client is someone who has. They are separate records because they hold different information and have different lifecycles.

A lead holds

  • Name, business, email and phone
  • What they are interested in
  • A quote, a bid amount, and the date the bid was cast
  • A job description
  • Its stage in the pipeline

A client holds all of that, plus

  • Every job done for them: what it was, when it completed, what it billed and what it actually paid
  • Billed, collected and outstanding totals
  • Whether their Website Manager access is on

Turning a lead into a client

Converting a lead creates the client record, copies the contact details across, links the two so the client can always be traced back, and moves the lead to the Won stage.

Note. Dragging a card into Won records that the opportunity was won; it does not by itself create the client record. Conversion is a separate step.
